Multimedia Artist
Lets get wordy
Stephen is naturally drawn to communicating through visuals and sound rather than the written word.
Stephen lives near Birmingham; Stephen is a multimedia artist working with photography, film, music, sound, sculpture and fashion primarily through his project BuStop
With his camera Stephen uses the graffiti etched bus shelter windows as a lens. The subsequent impressionist and abstract images are an exploration of anxiety, depression, detachment and empowerment.
Driven by a desire to transcend conventional boundaries, Stephen delved into the world of fashion and artwear. Stephen creates wearable art that blurs the line between fashion and artistic expression. Each piece is meticulously crafted to ignite conversation and provoke thought about identity, self-expression, and the role of fashion in society.
But Stephen’s artistic endeavours did not stop there. His insatiable thirst for innovation led him to explore the realms of music and sound. By seamlessly blending audio elements with his visual creations, he creates immersive experiences that transport audiences into alternate realities. Whether it’s through ethereal melodies or pulsating beats, Stephen’s sonic landscapes enhance his visual narratives and leave a lasting impact on those who experience them.
Throughout his career, Stephen Calcutt has garnered recognition for his exceptional talent and unrivalled dedication to his craft. His work has been exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums around the world, earning him accolades from critics and art enthusiasts alike. However, for Stephen, success is not measured solely by external validation; it is about connecting with individuals on a deep, emotional level and inspiring them to see the world through a different lens.
As an artist who thrives on collaboration and interdisciplinary exploration, Stephen continually seeks new avenues to expand his artistic repertoire. He embraces challenges as opportunities for growth and believes that true innovation lies at the intersection of different disciplines. Through ongoing experimentation and an unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries, Stephen aims to redefine what it means to be an artist in the 21st century.
Intrigued by interactive technology and its potential to bridge the gap between art and audience, Stephen’s next venture is to create an interactive installation. This captivating work will invite viewers to become active participants in the art-making process. Through touch sensors, motion detectors, or voice recognition systems, Stephen aims to empower individuals to shape their own unique experiences within his installation. This symbiotic relationship between artist and audience fosters a deeper connection and a sense of ownership in the creative process.
In conclusion, Stephen Calcutt is not just an artist; he is a visionary who uses various mediums to ignite conversations, challenge societal norms, and inspire change. With his unparalleled skill set in photography, videography, fashion, artwear, music and sound, interactive installations, and 360 panoramic experiences, he invites audiences into a world where imagination knows no limits.
As an artist I have exhibited work in places such as The RWA 165 Annual Open Exhibition 2017 in Bristol , The London Group The London Open 2017 and Open Projection 3: Chiaroscuro Coventry Cathedral.
I have an MA in Visual Communication (with distinction). I’m a multimedia artist working with photography, film, music, sound, sculpture and fashion. I started out primarily in the artworld visually and musically expressing my personal experience of the world primarily through a project called BuStopia.
BuStopia
BuStopia is a unique and thought-provoking art installation that uses a powerful visual narrative to explore themes of anxiety, depression, isolation, detachment, and empowerment. The use of graffiti etched bus shelter windows as the backdrop creates an urban and raw atmosphere, providing a symbolic canvas for the emotional journey depicted in the performance. The symbolism centres around the theatrical device of ‘the fashion show’ as a metaphor for transformation and empowerment.
The performers start moving in an anxious state obscured from view by the graffitied windows. Graffiti is projected on to them for the first part of the performance symbolic of being swamped in mental disorder and chaos. They are wearing white over garments as they approach the outer side of the maze of windows they remove their white garments the graffiti is now encapsulated in their clothing representing taking control and empowerment this is reflected in the final stage of the cat walk.
